Working While Attending Sonography Schools

Sonography schools are very demanding of your time and can cause a financial strain because many programs require so much study time that working can be difficult. There are hundreds of sonography programs all over the United States, most of which are two years in length. Graduates typically receive a two year associate's degree upon completion.

Sonography programs prepare students for a career as a diagnostic sonographer. Sonographers utilize sound waves that bounce off of organs, bones, and tissue which then make an image. Sonographers then use the image to make medical diagnosis' to be used by health care providers.

Many sonography schools mandate that students attend the program on a full time basis. A full time sonography student spends their days in class as well as the laboratory practicing the techniques they learn in class. They are also required to spend several hundred hours working and observing out in the real world at a medical facility.

Because of the time factor many students cannot work a full time or even a part time job which can keep some student from applying. Approximately half of the accredited programs in the country discourage students from working no more than 15-20 hours per week, but they cannot mandate students keep to that rule.

Many students elect to take out student loans to cover livening expenses such as rent, gas, food, and supplies. Many students do not know that the extra money can be used for whatever they want once tuition has been paid.

Students who need to work try and get jobs that allow them to study or will work around their schedules. Many students utilize work-study, which is a financial aid related job. Most work study jobs are part time and require no more than 20 hours a week. The employers also understand that the person is a student first, then an employee. Plus, the job is usually related to sonography which allows them to gain helpful experience.

Night time hotel front desk clerk - this position is a favorite among allied health majors because they can work a lot of hours but can study. Daytime hotel clerks are usually too busy but the night shift is very slow.

Library assistants - again, this is a job best suited for the evening. Many college libraries are open very late and need people to watch the front desk. Again, the high time hours are very slow allowing for the occasional study break for the person working the front desk.

Freelance writer - many college students are becoming freelance writers where they can earn a decent living writing content for the internet. This typed of job is flexible and can be done on the student's own time. Depending on the type of job it is the pay can be very lucrative. Most students who have taken college level English composition are more than able to write well enough.
