Recruitment Agencies - 5 Tricks of the Trade to Be Aware of When Job Seeking

Job seeking is the adult equivalent of sitting GCSE exams. It is a task that everybody dreads, but unfortunately it is inevitable. As with exams, you are as good as doomed to failure from the outset, without proper preparation.

Across all employment sectors, the basics are the same. Ensure that your CV is limited to 2 pages, write with the needs of the recruiter in mind and ensure that you have the correct keywords, which link your experience to your desired role, throughout the document. We've all read these pointers a hundred times, and we know the basics, however this doesn't make the whole process any less time-consuming. Especially when most successful job applications include a tailor-made CV and covering letter.

Unfortunately the process can be made even more difficult when certain recruitment agencies become involved. Many use unorthodox methods to attain job seeker CVs. Five of these methods are outlined here.

Recruitment agency tricks of the trade

1. Posting fictitious vacancies in order to collect CVs. Job seekers take the time to apply for these vacancies, believing that their application will be send on to an employer, when in fact their CV will be kept on file solely by the recruitment agent. Avoid this situation by ascertaining the name of employers to which you are applying via the agency.

2. Contacting a job seeker, the details for which they have obtained by buying in lists of data from job boards that sell it to them, with the promise of an ideal job vacancy. "But first" the recruitment agent will say "I need the name of your HR manager at your current/previous company. The employer for this vacancy needs references prior to interview". This is often a lie and the agent is actually collecting these details in order that they can approach your HR manager to fill the vacancy that you will soon be leaving.

3. When calling a job seeker out of the blue, again with the promise of the perfect role, they will engage in conversation and then ask "Did you work for Dave Smith at Company X?". This will be a made up name, they won't actually know anybody at Company X, but they pose this question in the hope that you will reply "No, I worked for Paul Smith". The agent then has a direct contact to approach at Company X to offer their services.

4. Agents will often ask the minimum salary, or rate if a contractor, that a job seeker is willing to accept from a potential employer. Job applicants should never disclose the minimum amount that they would accept, as this is more than likely the maximum you will ever receive from vacancies that you accept from that recruitment agent. Even if an employer is offering more than that rate, the difference will go into the pocket of the agent.

5. A trick that is particularly common in the IT contractor market is to ask the job seeker which organisations they have sent their CV to, in order that they don't duplicate their work. Some will even say that having your CV submitted twice for the same role will harm your chances of being taken forward for an interview (it won't). They are asking this so that they can contact those recruiters and put their other candidates forward for the position, thus increasing your competition for each of those applications.

By being aware of these tricks of the trade, a lot of time and effort can be saved in the hunt for a new vacancy. Certain recruitment agencies can be a useful resource, but it is an industry that is full of bad eggs. Ideally, when applying for a job you should do so directly to an employer or via a direct employer job board, which will not provide candidate details to 3rd party recruitment agents. This will save a lot of time on wasted applications for bogus jobs.

US Economists Predict 40% Chance of Double Dip Recession

August 2, 2011 will be a day remembered as the day the US almost averted a debt crisis. Congress passed legislation increasing the debt limit to 2.4 trillion dollars (or 24,000 times 1,000,000 for perspective) and agreed to take the next few months and reduce governmental spending. The government simply has to stop spending more than it generates while maintaining the integrity of the services they provide including Social Security and entitlement programs, infrastructure, and national security.

And doing so will be no small task.

A double-dip recession is basically the phenomenon of going into a recession, getting out of that recession for a short period of time, and then slipping back into recession. Experts have claimed a 40% chance of going back into a recession, but there is also a 60% chance we will see continued (albeit small) economic growth.

The growth we have seen over the past several months has been painfully slow, but still producing small economic gains. Going back into a recession would mean losing any ground that has been made up over the past several months.

The debt crisis puts additional strain on job markets, stock markets, and the entire financial institution. If the government's credit rating were downgraded, it could cause interest rates to climb making getting access to capital more difficult and more expensive. This could put a further strain on the job market as companies pull back from being able to expand and reinvest in job-creating initiatives.

Along the same timeline, the US jobs market is also in limbo.

There is a surprising disconnect between employment and workers. Unemployment rates are creeping upwards again close to 10% while online job postings are again at their highest levels ever. More companies are furloughing employees and starting layoffs again, and the future just doesn't seem very bright for the foreseeable future if you just look at the numbers. Between the lines though, there is room for optimism.

Things You Should Know Before the Job Interview

You receive the phone call, email, or text message from a prospective employer and the first thing that happens is a calm elation of possibly landing that job. Before jumping around the room or falling to your knees in thanks, get a legal-pad and pen to write down a comprehensive and structured approach to your interview. It is wise to continue the professional in developing a plan to execute the interview without overdoing a scripted response.

Write down 10 questions that you would like to ask the interviewer. The last thing a person hiring another individual wants is a candidate without any questions when asked. Some of the questions that would be beneficial are as follows in no specific order:

How does this position relate to the company's mission?How long have they sought someone to fill this position?Why is this position vacant?What are the goals and expectations of a person filling this position?How would he or she describe the corporate culture?What are some of the current or perceived challenges for someone in this position?What do you and other fellow employees like about the organization?Are there potential opportunities for career advancement?What are some of the pressing issues needed to be addressed by the position?How are the interdepartmental, vendor and customer relations?

The questions above are specifically designed to discover the need from the position, the functions required, the work environment, interpersonal relations, and and idea of what is needed by the firm immediately.

The goal for asking these question is to have a thumbnail of what it is like to work there and to get a feel for the job itself. You may add other questions, but don't overdo it. In most cases you will not have time to get through all 10 questions, so just go for those that mix both questions about the position and the corporate culture and work environment. Try to avoid asking questions about salary unless it is not in the advertisement or has not been discussed previously.

After writing your 10 interview questions, practice the most obvious questions asked during an interview such as follows:

Why do you want to work here?Why should we hire you over other more qualified candidates?Do you think that you would be a good fit here?Tell us a bit about yourself.How would you rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 in respect to your ability to do this job effectively?May we contact your previous employers?What other skills do you have that would enhance this positions?Have you been dismissed from any previous employer due to behavioral or ethical issues?How would you describe your last employment environment?Would any of your previous employers rehire you?

It is very important to review these questions because some of these may pop up during an interview and hesitation or slow answers may convey a sense of insecurity. Also, there are some organizations that use the shock interview tactic meaning that the interviewee may have to arrange a three-way phone call with his or her past employer with the prospective employer listening in. This practice is rare, but some companies subscribe to this process.

Another tactic to be aware of is the situational interview where you may be put into the position during the interview with task to be completed to show competency and proficiency. Again, this is a rare situation, but some firms use this practice.

It is wise to study up on the organization by knowing a bit about the organizational structure, the names of the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer. If it is a publically traded company, take note of the stock price, and pull up the SEC 10K found on most company web sites. Read the notes because they disclose some internal information that could be beneficial during small-talk to express more of an interest int he welfare of the organization. This distinguishes you from someone just looking for a job.

Make sure that you have at least ten copies of your resume on white or light gray paper using 12 point print. Try to ensure that it is no more than two pages, filled with only relevant information that links you to the job. In this current job market the generic resume of old is over. A rule-of-thumb would be to use a targeted resume that specifically addresses a position based on your skills and the job description. The goal is to use resume to qualify you for the job during the interview. This does not mean to do a total rewrite from what actually got you the interview, but to offer a bit more detail.

Make sure that only the last 10 years or less are covered on the resume because the other will usually be ignored or irrelevant. It is a best practice to wear a dark or gray suit or more business appropriate attire. Please avoid wearing casual or revealing clothing, it may sound elementary, but it happens. Besides that, make sure to get enough rest the night before, groom yourself well on the next day, and arrive at least 15 minutes early, make eye-contact, and smile because it could be a meeting that could change your life.
